Portugal has to face a lot of heavy matches at the World Cup. The wing sector is expected to be key of Seleccao’s strength to face all the challenges that are awaiting.
In the 2010 World Cup, Cristiano Ronaldo et al will be in one group with Brazil, Ivory Coast, and North Korea.
“This is the toughest group in this competition. Everything is difficult. So it is important for us to win, at least to get a point in the first match against Ivory Coast,” said the midfielder Simao Sabrosa as quoted by the official FIFA website.
In the qualifying round, Portugal had unsteady steps. They were lost in competing with Denmark and had to go through the play-off to go to South Africa.
“What happened at that time was, coach Carlos Queiroz is looking for the main team for the World Cup. He decided to entrust to young players, and it gave us difficulties in the beginning,” explained Simao.
Now Portugal has passed that stage. Their play is growing and growing to be steadier. To be able to pass from the group phase isn’t their main targets. But it does not mean that their struggle be easier for them in the future.
“Our main goal is to be qualified to the big 16. Then we will see how the development is. If we are qualified, everything will be possible. For it is quite possible that we could meet Spain in the next round,” said Simao.
The talented wingers who are owned by the land of Iberian Peninsula are expected to be the key to face all the challenges.
“We have been trained since our childhood in a system where the winger has always had a major role. As a nation, to have extraordinary wingers is very important,” he finished.
